Major inventory supplier trims purchase orders to the country’s largest retailers

Helen of Troy, a leading supplier of many brands like Hydro Flask and Vicks, is falling back after a year of inventory glut. The company is cutting purchase orders as its top three customers, Amazon, Walmart, and Target, scale back on products due to stockpiles that haven’t sold. Helen of Troy CEO Julien Mininburg says that they hope the scale-back will normalize the business forecast of both the supplier and retailer.

💸 FedEx Ground contractors are banding together to demand higher per-stop pay before the peak season comes around. Inflation has been a major concern for most, and the contractors are hoping for an increase to help curb the financial pressures they have been facing. ☀️ The railroads are not prepared for the heatwave soaring across the continents, say civil engineers and transit authorities. Triple-digit temperatures derailed a train in Concord, California, wreaked havoc on the Portland, Oregon public transit system, and canceled subway services in London’s tube system. Alicia Trost, a representative for the Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority, is warning that the extreme heat will cause issues in the region. Steel expands and softens in heat, creating a deadly situation for America’s railroads.


Growing transportation costs have skyrocketing fuel surcharges to blame

The freight market’s price growth comes from the 9.1% inflation rate, increasing fuel surcharges, and seasonal issues. The Cowen/AFS Freight Index reflects both contract and spot rates over truckload, LTL, parcel ground, and parcel express sectors. The rates are expected to continue to climb in Q3 2022.

Cost-per-shipment growth has dramatically increased because of fuel, accessorial increases, and strict selective practices by carriers, as well.
