Port of Oakland shut gates for 3rd night in a row while truckers protest CA AB5 law

Good morning! It’s Friday AND National Hammock Day. So after work, make sure to prop those feet up and relax. 💤

California’s AB5 law has many truckers livid. Approximately 70,000 drivers have had their owner-operator status threatened by the regulatory move by Sacramento, and many truckers have taken to protesting at the gates of the West Coast’s largest shipping ports. Notably, the Port of Oakland shut down all operations for the day. Currently, the California trucking industry relies heavily on contract work, argue the protestors.

Check out today’s featured article from AJOT to read about the protests at the West Coast’s third busiest port and what can be expected in the days/weeks to come if the trucker protests continue at its gates. ☕️

📲 The market’s demand for smartphones was fallen slightly to the wayside, and the semiconductor suppliers that have been voicing fears of a shortage now have an oversupply of chips. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, an Apple supplier of semiconductor chips, said in its second-quarter earnings call that the company expected the semiconductor supply chain would need a few more quarters to re-balance itself. Semiconductor suppliers have noted that they will be heavily-monitoring purchasing patterns of consumers over the next few quarters to avoid any further miscalculations in the forecast.

🇷🇺 The Nord Stream pipeline system is back in operation after a brief respite, delivering Russian gas flow into Europe, which is under the massive strain of reduced supplies. Much of Europe worried that Russian President Vladimir Putin would keep the pipeline turned off, so the move gives the continent much relief. However, the control of the pipeline still leaves many unsure of the future. The European Union is stockpiling natural gas in preparation for the winter months while they are currently experiencing its worst energy crisis in many decades. Gas shipments from Russia to Europe have been stifled for months, and industry experts are worried that without Russian natural gas, Europe would suffer massive power outages over the wolf winter months.

Vendors now have more opportunities for supply chain financing

The corporate supply chain finance market grew globally to a whopping $1.8 trillion in 2021 - a 38% increase from 2020. This supply chain finance growth may be a result of skyrocketing interest rates, as the factoring programs available in the market can provide suppliers with a cheap source of cash up-front.

The growth also may signal a widening chasm of financial stress upon supply chain companies, who are less able to finance their own operations without assistance from outside sources.
