Upstate New York Braces for Heavy Lake-Effect Snowfall


Heavy lake-effect snow is hitting parts of Upstate New York, with 20 to 30 inches expected downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Lake-effect snow warnings are in effect until early Wednesday for some areas, with rapid changes in visibility and whiteout conditions possible. The snowfall is caused by cold winds blowing over warmer ice-free waters, but this episode is not expected to be as severe as previous ones, with winds coming more from the west.
