Food insecurity in the United States surged in 2022, reaching levels not seen since the aftermath of the financial crisis, according to government data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The share of households unable to reliably afford food rose to 12.8%, up from 10.2% the previous year. This increase was driven by factors such as historic inflation rates, the end of pandemic-era benefits, and the disappearance of supports like the child tax credit. Vulnerable populations, including households with children and those headed by single mothers, were particularly affected, with significant racial disparities.
