UN's FAO to Advocate Meat Reduction for Climate Action at COP28, Facing Industry Opposition


The United Nations' Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) is set to release a global food systems roadmap during the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, which will recommend Western countries, including the United States, to reduce their meat consumption as part of efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. While the roadmap also addresses issues like farming adaptation to erratic weather and emissions from food waste and fertilizer use, it is expected to face opposition, especially from the agricultural sector. Agriculture generates about 18 billion tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to 34% of total global emissions, with livestock contributing around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
