Aviation Professionals Advocate for Mental Health Reform Amidst FAA Review


Commercial pilot Troy Merritt and other aviation professionals have highlighted their struggles with mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and substance abuse, during a summit meeting in Washington, D.C. They urged federal regulators, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), to reform rules that deter individuals from seeking treatment due to concerns about losing their medical clearance to work and fly. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has called attention to the need for changes in policies to encourage aviation professionals to seek treatment when needed. The FAA has signaled its willingness to reevaluate and potentially change its policies related to mental health.
