CVSA’s road check decommissions over 12,000 commercial motor vehicles
From May 17th through May 19th of this year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck commercial motor vehicle inspection and enforcement initiative was underway. In three short days, inspectors across the nation decommissioned 12,456 commercial motor vehicles. Furthermore, an additional 3,714 commercial motor vehicle drivers were also placed out of service due to violations.
CVSA’s North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria has clearly laid out what can be expected in these compliance blitzes. Roadside inspections are specifically looking for out-of-service violations regarding these vehicles.

White House flirts with idea of buying up oil to refill depleted reserves
It’s expected that when crude prices drop below $80 a barrel, the United States will begin buying up oil to refill its low reserves. In March of 2022, the Biden Administration ordered the release of 180 million barrels from the country’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve in a bid to offset the growing oil problem.
After the release of the stockpile, the reserve is sitting at its lowest level since 1984.

Female technicians wanted: STAT
The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) Index has reported what we may have already known: they are a lack of diversity regarding women in technician shops. In a recent survey conducted by the WIT, only about 13.7% of all drivers are female and approximately 3.7% of technicians in transportation companies are women.
WIT President Ellen Voie has been vocal about the need to increase these numbers to diversify the workplace. In an effort to promote this career choice to women, the Women in Trucking foundation provides scholarships for training in these areas.
Let’s Get Global 🌎
💉 First semiconductors, and now bio-manufacturing. President Joe Biden signed the executive order dubbed “The National Biotechnology and Bio-manufacturing Initiative” this week with the aim to boost domestic bio-manufacturing instead of relying so heavily on China for medicines and chemicals. The initiative has not specified clear funding goals quite yet, but we expect that is not far off. (Supply Chain Brain)
🇰🇷 South Korea and the United States are still battling it out… but both do so with a hopeful outlook of compromise. The two countries are debating electric-vehicle subsidies, of which tax breaks were ruled out when electric vehicles were assembled abroad. (AJOT)
More to consider…
Ho, ho, ho… time to get hired! UPS is on a mission to fill 100,000 positions before peak season really sets in and the holiday influx of packages overwhelms its system. The company’s new hiring process is digital, meaning those who apply could know within minutes whether UPS will offer them a job as a delivery handler or a CDL driver. (Supply Chain Dive)
Unions are on the move. The Biden Administration, which has been vocally pro-labor, has encouraged labor unions to organize across various industries. Retailers such as Amazon and Starbucks have seen massive efforts to unionize in certain pockets of the country. (MHL News)
Here we go again. The CHIPS and Science Act has been vocally disliked by the likes of Bernie Saunders and Ted Cruz, but has regardless… been passed by Congress. The effect of the CHIPS Act could not be felt by the U.S. semiconductor supply chains. (Resilinc)
