From a GenZ Lens: August 15th, 2022

Winding road in a forest of leaves changing.

Hello again, my name is Christina. I am 19 years old, and still new to the Transportation Industry. I would like to give you a Gen Z’s view on some trending Logistics topics. You can find this one on www.ilevellogistics.com in “The Daily” for August 15th, 2022.

Today’s article is titled in the daily “Drivers got a 10.9% pay increase last year, and that number could still climb”.  The statistics of the increase came from a new industry survey paid for by the American Trucking Association (ATA). In the writing it is said that this salary increase had many factors playing into it, these factors included: the post-pandemic economy, the demand for goods, and the driver shortage. As someone that is new to the Logistics industry, I was surprised by the level of pay increase for drivers. It was even more surprising seeing that almost 80% of truckers get paid by the miles driven, and the rest got paid hourly or by salary. While drivers get paid well, they also get great benefits, including sick pay and having holidays off.

The turnover rate of drivers is still extremely high (between 70% - 75%). Most CDL (Commercial Driver s License) drivers are around the age of 30 when they start. Trucking schools are now drawing in people as young as 18 years old. As a 19-year-old I cannot imagine myself or any person I know my age driving a semi-truck. I personally do not agree with having 18- to 20-year-olds operating such a heavy truck. This age group is still highly immature and may be a liability to the company they work for. There is currently a “pilot” program encouraging this age bracket to join the truck driving workforce by utilizing mentorship to expedite the typical learning curve associated with this career.

Time will tell how well this will work out for the individuals, the companies, and the industry itself.
