Cruise Sheds 900 Jobs and Refocuses Strategy Amid Challenges, While Waymo Expands


Cruise, the robotaxi company, has announced the layoff of 900 employees following the firing of nine executives amid the fallout from an October incident involving a pedestrian. Cruise is shifting its strategy to focus on perfecting parent company GM’s Bolt platform, relaunching its ride-hailing service in one city before scaling, and enhancing safety standards. Meanwhile, rival Waymo has been expanding its driverless taxi services to areas in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix, although it has faced its challenges, including layoffs and traffic disruptions.
