U.S. is basically “giving carbon away”
The United States is under-selling carbon dioxide at a steep discount. Researchers in the journal Nature claimed that the U.S. should be pricing at $185 per ton of carbon dioxide emitted, but currently, the rate sits at $51. An author and director of the federal climate policy initiative at Resources for the Future, Kevin Rennert, says that we are vastly underestimating the harm caused by selling carbon dioxide at such a low rate.
Stanford University economist Marshall Burke has suggested that there are much more intense efforts that need to be taken in order to curb the current emissions flow coming from the United States.
