Good morning, happy World Oceans Day! 🌊
The ocean is a diverse place… as diverse as the pool of potential drivers.
The industry is anticipating a 100,000 truck driver shortage next year and companies are new to fill those open spots. Men currently make up 85% of the trucking and logistics workforce and the American Trucking Association says that less than 8% of drivers are women. The industry is looking to change that.
Check out today’s featured article from CCJ Digital for info on how trucking can enhance its industry for further diversity over the next year. ☕️

🧻 Sam’s Club stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area can be expecting a special delivery via driverless trucks: toilet paper. These vehicles will be operating in live traffic and signify a major push for autonomous trucks in the field. With drivers hard to come by, this move will lead stores to save more money on inventory and reduce complexities in the supply chain.
💰 Ryder Transportation, a major player in the trucking industry, has rejected a $4.4 billion takeover bid. The bid came from a shareholder, HG Vora Capital Management. This bid was at a 20.3% premium, and the shareholder currently owns 9.9% of Ryder already. Ryder’s executives announced the rejection during an Investor Day presentation last week, citing their confidence that shareholder value was only going to continue to grow.
📦 Your eyes do not deceive you - packaging is growing smaller. Dubbed “Shrinkflation”, it’s not anything new. In times of great inflation, companies often start by reducing the size of packaging. For example, Cottonelle Ultra Clean Care toilet paper went from 340 sheets per roll to 312 sheets. Fritos Scoops chips “Party Size” used to be 18 ounces but is now more expensive at 15.5 ounces.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul launched a new website to assist the push for a growing need for federal electric vehicle infrastructure funds for the state. The website asks for data from fleet operators in New York to better enhance their plan that is currently sitting on an August 1st deadline.
Currently, the state of New York is slated to receive $175 million over five years to be put towards expanding its EV charging network, through President Joe Biden’s $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. New York is also eligible to request $2.5 billion in EV charging grants on top of the $175 million.
A ’70s Stagflation repeat can no longer be dismissed
Stagflation was a 1970’s problem, but we might be looking down the same barrel today. Stagflation is when sky-rocketing inflation intertwines with a weak job market and created a disaster for consumers and a frustrating situation for economists to analyze.
Stagflation was assumed not to happen again, as it was expected inflation would only climb when unemployment was low and the economy was strong. But a series of events over the past few years have some reevaluating its probability, and the World Bank’s outlook on the global economy has become notably bleak.
