Are you for or against 60mph speed limiters?
Good morning! Today is the 200th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. Can you believe we are already this far into 2022? ⏳
We’ve talked about the speed limiters being proposed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration before. The FMCSA has invited those with interest in the regulation to share their thoughts on the proposal and has now received more the 15,000 comments since May 2022. Yesterday was the final day comments were being accepted.
The vast majority of those who’ve commented are truckers who are adamantly against the 60mph limiters, but it’s important to note that there are those who are in support of them. Mainly safety organizations such as The Advocates for Highway, and Auto Safety, Truck Safety Coalition, Citizens for Reliable, and Safe Highways and Parents Against Tired Truckers.
Check out today’s featured article from Landline Media to read about those who do approve of 60 mph limiters on trucks, and why there is a push for further regulation. ☕️

🔋 Lithium-ion batteries have a disturbing tie to forced labor in China’s Xinjiang province. One of the world’s largest producers of the highly sought-after material is Ganfeng Lithium Co., a Chinese company that is now partnering with an entity to explore the possibility of developing lithium, nickel, and other critical metals in Xinjiang. Both activists and Western governments have condemned the region for the enslavement of Uyghurs and other Muslim citizens in the region and this comes on the heels of countries like the U.S. sanctioning companies that operate in the region. Electric vehicle makers such as Tesla and BMW AG have partnerships with Ganfeng Lithium, drawing deep criticism from investors and consumers of electric vehicles.
✈️ Now that the Euro is equivalent to the U.S. dollar, many people want to book their European vacation - but the airfares are astronomical due to the rising fuel prices. But the high price tag might not be such a bad thing, after all. The COVID-19 pandemic was quite the blow to the airlines, but since the beginning of 2022, the price of jet fuel skyrocketed by approximately 90 %. Those prices have caused some short-term pain for travelers, for certain. But the increase in marginal costs of flying has created a healthier industry and economics for the sector, increasing the profitability of airlines that were, not long ago, on the brink of total annihilation.
🚢 Scrubbers, a system put in place to clean the exhaust gasses from container ships and reduce pollutants that are put into the air, are doing little to help clear up pollution of the water. The International Maritime Organization has made public its efforts to reduce pollution from the sea-shipping sulfur output but has made a tradeoff in order to save money. Scrubbers are a cheap option to clean the air around the ship but pour that dirty air straight into the water around them instead. The environmental implications of the air-cleaning method are making industry experts concerned, with over 4,300 ships globally using this technology as of 2020. Due to this technology, approximately 10 gigatons of polluted water are disposed of into the ocean every year.
Car safety features are being quietly removed from new models amid semiconductor shortage
From blind spot monitors to proximity alerts, some safety features are being axed from new models of vehicles due to the semiconductor shortage. Electronic features such as fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation systems and touchscreen displays are also being removed in order to keep the assembly lines moving - but the safety featured removal has some very concerned.
While blind spot monitoring systems aren’t mandated by any governmental regulations, some have considered them now commonplace. Because of the chip shortage, some models that aren’t necessarily considered “low-spec” could be built and sold with fewer safety features than previous models.
