Port of Virginia Achieves 100% Clean Power


On New Year's Day, the Port of Virginia achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first U.S. East Coast seaport to operate entirely on 100% clean power, accomplishing its goal well ahead of the planned 2032 timeline. This achievement not only aligns the port with global sustainability initiatives but also establishes it as a leader in port sustainability and technology. The switch to clean power results in a nearly 50% reduction in carbon emissions per container move, encompassing both onsite emissions (Scope 1) and supply chain emissions from power generation (Scope 2).

The Port of Virginia's readiness for clean electricity stems from prior investments in electrification, including a substantial fleet of electric stacking cranes, rail cranes, and STS cranes. As expansion projects progress, these numbers are set to increase, further enhancing the port's eco-friendly capabilities.

To secure its clean power supply, the port entered into a power purchase agreement with Dominion Energy, a prominent utility company deeply involved in offshore wind investments. Dominion's President and CEO, Robert M. Blue, lauded the port's commitment to sustainability, highlighting its pivotal role in the East Coast's clean energy transition.

Additionally, the enthusiasm for embracing green technologies sometimes overshadows practicality. Clean energy solutions like electric trucks and cranes may not yet match the power and efficiency of their conventional counterparts.
