Federal Maritime Commission Chairman visits Port of NY, promises extra scrutiny for carriers


Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman Daniel B. Maffei paid the Port of New York a visit after growing congestion at the terminal forced port officials to announce a new “container imbalance fee” for ocean carriers. There, the chairman advised that he will do “everything in his power” to avoid carriers absorbing involuntarily subsidized storage for empty containers that aren’t their responsibility.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s congestion has inflated cargo volumes by almost 12% in 2022 compared to 2021, and even further… an increase of 34% compared to the same time in 2019.
