FBI's Latest Crime Data Reveals An Alarming Trend of Car Thefts


In 2022, motor vehicle thefts in the United States surged by over 8%, resulting in the theft of nearly a million vehicles valued at over $20 billion, according to the FBI's latest Crime in the Nation data. The agency reported 1,213,913 total charges related to motor vehicle thefts, compared to 636,941 in 2021, despite data-sharing challenges. Carjackings also increased to 25,400 incidents, with over half involving weapons, and property crimes rose by 7.1%, while violent crimes decreased by 1.7%, including a 6.1% drop in homicides and a 5.4% decline in rapes.
