China Tightens Control Over Graphite Exports to Protect National Security

China has announced that it will require export permits for certain graphite products to safeguard national security and assert control over critical mineral supply chains. The move is seen as a response to growing international pressure on Chinese companies due to concerns over their industrial practices. Graphite is a crucial component in electric vehicle (EV) battery anodes, and China dominates the production and refining of graphite used in these batteries. The new export restrictions will take effect on December 1, 2023, and apply to high-purity synthetic graphite and natural flake graphite products. While it's unclear how much immediate impact these measures will have, they are expected to drive efforts to develop alternative supply sources for graphite outside of China.
