Chinese Container Ship Suspected in Baltic Gas Pipeline Damage, Investigation Ongoing

Finnish investigators have identified the Chinese container ship NewNew Polar Bear as the likely cause of damage to the BalticConnector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia. They found evidence that a 6-ton anchor from the ship may have dislodged and damaged the pipeline. Whether the damage was intentional or accidental is still under investigation, but initial suspicions of Russian involvement have shifted to focus on the Chinese vessel, which is currently sailing in Russian waters. Repair work on the pipeline is expected to last until at least April 2024, and damage to a telecom cable in the same area is also believed to be connected to the Chinese vessel.
